Civil War

Cailee Spaeny you’re going to the moon.

So worth seeing in the cinema - an anxiety inducing ride carried by the amazing performances. I do think it could have said more though - if you’re going into this hoping for political commentary you will be disappointed, but I don’t think it’s completely absent of relevance, like some feel. It shows the closeness of a chaotic mess that the US could become and it emphasises the reality of other countries current situations - it’s definitely anti-war. However I do wish it had been more openly critical of far-right ideologies and the dangers of this for the US (although I’m aware this is my political preference and maybe the idea was to not alienate some viewers so the message still lands).

The focus is on photojournalism though and with this, it is great. The characters perfectly show the appeal and the torment of this profession but also its importance. Perhaps even, the apolitical nature of the film is a reference to photojournalists with the idea to purely present what is actually happening without any personal biases.

I understand any ratings for this tbh - you could easily feel let down and disappointed and give it a low rating but if someone was enthralled by the ride I could equally understand a very high rating.

If you go into this with tempered expectations I would definitely recommend it. Also thank you for reminding me to listen to Dream Baby Dream.

Writing a day later; the more time passes, the more I’m thinking about this film and the more I think it’s great.
