In the Mood for Love
Been wanting to watch this for ages and happened to see it showing at a student cinema nearby which was very lucky. Visuals, colours, cinematography were as good as I expected given the reputation of this film, but the music was equally as impactful to me. I’m kind of annoyed I was quite tired watching this cause I know there’s probably a lot of subtlety I missed on this first watch but what I did pick up was amazing still.
The framing of the shots is great and you’re often having to try and figure out the context and nature of a scene which keeps you engaged. After what feels like a bit of a chaotic opening where you’re trying to figure out the situation and who’s who, the rest of the film sort of meanders but in a beautiful and captivating way. The scene where you think she’s confronting her husband but it turns out they’re role playing that scenario again is amazing and the best example of you discovering more about the reality of the scene as it plays out.
Whilst the narrative is quite simple, there is a lot to take away still. The idea that they fall in love with each other (partly) because of the quality that they are faithful but that their expression of their love is restricted by this because following the path of their spouses they’d become unfaithful and remove this quality from each other is so smart and frustrating at the same time.
Mr Chow’s description of falling in love/developing feelings is perfect - to not realise it fully until it’s happened but being unable to pinpoint when it did happen but also feeling like it’s not just happened is such a universal experience and kind of unexplainable process but he describes the sensation of it perfectly.
