Past Lives

Been waiting months and months for this to come out in UK - everything I’d heard suggested it would be a film I love and it didn’t disappoint. It’s beautiful visually and in terms of the relationships you see on screen. The balance of thought provoking dialogue, a heart-aching plot, periods of quiet and an inevitable relatability to aspects of the story left me (and I’m sure anyone who watches) deeply reflective during and after watching this. Reminded me of Love Song which I watched recently but this was even a level up on that for me and resonated with me more. It manages to perfectly capture the feelings of “what if” and the feeling of the passage of time and how uncontrollable it can feel at times. I read in another review how it’s a film that shows a great portrayal loneliness but has a sense of comfort at the same time which is similar to the mentioned Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and I couldn’t agree more. This is such a powerful thing to be able to do for me and I’m not sure I can pinpoint exactly how it is created, but no doubt through a large combination of things; but it allows you to personally come to terms with things in your own life that have brought you similar sadness, aching or longing and accept those things. This is such an incredible and rare quality for a film to have.

I got to watch this at an early screening (although very late compared to other countries) and it was one of my favourite cinema going experiences as it felt everyone there was so appreciative of what we were watching and had the same great desire to see this film for the months whilst we’ve seen the great reviews from people in other countries. Many of us sat through the credits till the lights came on - it was a film I did not want to end and I know for certain I am going to rewatch this when it releases in full partly just because I need that feeling that the tone of this film brought. I know I will almost certainly find more questions to consider which didn’t arise on this first watch as well. If you have the opportunity to see this film you are missing out if you don’t see it - the direction, the acting, the cinematography are incredible and whether it is typically your type of film or not, I believe everyone will gain something from watching this.
